Gas plumber and gas fitter, Northern Beaches

Smell gas? Get outside first. For gas hot water, cooktops, heaters and leaks, ask a licensed plumber who holds a gasfitting licence.

Gas work needs a licensed gasfitter. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas distributor from outside. For anything else, send us a request and a licensed plumber who holds a gasfitting licence can call you back.

What do I do if I smell gas?

Safety first. Do these in order.

  1. Leave the area and get everyone outside.
  2. Don't touch light switches or use flames. That includes lighters and candles.
  3. Call from outside, not from inside the house.

Call your gas distributor's emergency line (it is on your gas bill). Call 000 if there is fire or immediate danger.

Water coming in as well?

See emergency plumbing for burst pipes and flooding. Gas comes first.

Once the smell is dealt with and the area is safe, a licensed plumber can find and fix the cause.

Do plumbers do gas fittings?

Some do, but only with the right licence. The NSW Government says you need the right licence or certificate to do plumbing, draining or gasfitting work. A plumbing licence on its own is not the same thing.

Gas can leak, catch fire and release fumes. That is why DIY is the wrong call, and why this page exists. Tell us what you need and we pass it to licensed plumbers. Ask any plumber to confirm their gasfitting licence before they start.

Ask for the compliance paperwork when the job is done.

Gas plumbing questions

Is gas being phased out in NSW?

We could not find a clear official NSW rule that removes gas from existing homes, so we won't guess. Ask your plumber about electric options before you replace a gas appliance.

Is there a call out charge for a gas leak?

Plumbers set their own call-out fees, so ask before they come. Ask for the fee and the likely price up front. Reporting a leak to your gas distributor is a separate call.

Can I fix a gas leak myself?

No. Leave the area and call from outside. Gas work needs a licensed gasfitter.

Not sure if your job needs a gasfitter? Tell us about the appliance and a licensed plumber can say.
