Before the plumber gets there
Four things that stop a leak turning into a ceiling repair. Do what's safe, then leave the rest to the plumber.
Turn off the water at the meter
It's usually near the front boundary, in a small box or behind a lid in the footpath. Turn the tap clockwise until it stops. Units can have a tap in the laundry or a cupboard.
Keep water away from power
If water is near power points, lights or the switchboard, switch the power off at the main switch. If you're not sure it's safe, stay out of the room.
Switch off the hot water
For an electric unit, turn off its circuit at the switchboard. For gas, turn the dial to off or pilot. This protects the unit while the water is off.
Take a photo
A quick photo of the leak, the meter and the hot water label helps the plumber bring the right parts.
Smell gas? Leave the house, don't use switches, and call your gas network's emergency line. Call 000 if anyone is in danger.

You choose
Plumbers call you with a price and a time. You pick the one that suits.
What changes the price
The plumber sets the price. These are the questions worth asking on the phone.
Time of day
Nights, weekends and public holidays can cost more than business hours.
Ask: is this an after-hours rate?Call-out fee
Plumbers can charge one. Some take it off the bill if you go ahead.
Ask: what's the call-out, and is it included?Finding the problem
Camera inspections and leak detection can be priced on their own.
Ask: is the inspection separate?Parts and access
A new hot water unit is a big part of that bill. Pipes under a slab take longer to reach.
Ask: which model, and will you need to dig?Palm Beach to Manly

Straight answers
Still have a question? Ask it and a licensed plumber can help.
Who does the work?
A licensed plumber. We pass your job to independent plumbers with a current NSW contractor licence. The one you choose does the work and sets the price. We check every plumber's NSW licence before they join.
Does it cost anything to ask?
No. Asking is free. If you go ahead, you pay the plumber directly, so ask for their call-out fee and price before they start.
When can a plumber come?
That depends on your suburb, the time and the plumber. Ask the plumber for a time when they call.
Will more than one plumber call me?
You may get a few calls. That's normal, and it lets you compare prices and times before you pick one.
Who sees my details?
Only us and the licensed plumbers we pass your job to. Nobody else. See the privacy notice below.
Do you do gas work?
Yes, where the plumber also holds a gasfitting licence. Tell us it's gas when you ask and we'll match you to someone licensed for it.
